I love soups and in fact I thought of this very idea myself and even had a business plan in motion. Moving to sunny warm Florida put a Kabash on that,  soup would sell but not so much on those 80 to 90 degree days, at least not enough to make a living.

After living in frigid western NY for almost 8 years and becoming a regular at Nathan’s soups a little soup joint that was located below my apartment, soup became a staple on my way home from work (before I became a restaurant entrepreneur).

I don’t want to take anything away from SOUPERGIRL but Nathan’s located on Park Ave in Rochester NY was a gem of a soup maker!

His soup menu consisted of several selections everyday accept Sundays (a man’s gotta have a day off). He also took the months of July and August-yes he actually took a well deserved two month break, from soup making…Wonder if he vacationed in Fl.?

There were-broths with meat, no meat and veggies, cream based, stews, chowder and chili’s, often it became difficult to choose one so I’d order two. He also offered these yummy cheese buns and onion buns, that he made from scratch and of course, desserts brownies and cookies.

What more do you need in life- soup, bread and dessert… I often wonder if Nathan’s is still there???

Sara considered several food ventures, including homemade ice cream.

A friend, suggested why not try soups your her mom is “always making amazing soup.”

The idea lit a fire in her and soon Sara and her mother Marilyn Polon where hot on the stove, testing slurping and churning out batch after batch of soup.

“I didn’t have any idea what I was getting into, but I’m having a great time coming up with new recipes and, of course, working with Sara.” Marilyn Polon

They prepare soup the way it was meant to be made, from scratch.

“Our soups are cooked slowly with love. They are homemade with fresh and seasonal ingredients. Many of our vegetables and herbs are organic and come from local farms around the area. Much of our produce comes from the Farm at Sunnyside, Next Step Produce, Twin Springs Fruit Farm and Toigo Orchards. We also work with a local farm coop called Tuscaora. The produce from Sunnyside, Next Step, and Tuscaora is both local AND organic! Our favorite combination!”-Sara Polon

Soupergirl soups are souper good for you!

They realize many stores and restaurants serve “fresh” soups around the area but they boastfully say- check out the ingredient lists of those soups – malodextrin, autolyzed yeast extract, corn syrup solids, and xantham gum- gum, Is it chewy? Why is it in the soup?

Their rule is simple – if grandmother did not recognize the ingredient, it should not be in the soup.

The Mother and Daughter team are honest as the day is long, “we are not chefs we are cooks.”

They are not afraid to say they didn’t go to the Culinary Institute or the Cordon Bleu. “Quite simply, we love soup. Our soups might not always be pretty (though usually they are) but they are good. Good and better yet, good for you! Which leads us to….” Why soup?

“Quite simply, every day is a good day for soup! It just takes one bowl of soup to make a meal. Eating soup is also the perfect way to easily incorporate healthy eating into your life. Worried about getting the five-to-seven-a-day vegetable recommendation? Need to add more whole grains into your life? Soup! It is perfect for any season, any kind of weather, any occasion, and any meal. Soup is the original comfort food.”-Sara Polon
